Kuwait has commissioned the design and construction of a new high tech city – ‘The City of Silk’ (Madinat Al Hareer in Arabic), a 250 square km urban area which is set to become an exciting magnet for international trade and tourism. The idea for the name was taken from the famous 'Road of Silk’ the route used by Western Europeans when trading with their Eastern partners, which was, of course, many years ago before the dawn of globalisation!
The project will cost around 77 billion dollars and its main intention is to create a free international market zone in Kuwait connecting Central Asia with Europe. It will be the biggest real estate project in the Middle East where the potential for investment in the property market is huge and grows steadily year by year. The project will be built in the Suibbiya area on the northern edge of the Kuwait Gulf, close to Iraq. When it is finally completed in 2030, it will have the ability to accommodate 750,000 people. It will be connected to Kuwait City by a causeway and bridge which will be of an amazing 26 km in length, an innovative improvement on the current 120 km, one and a half hour drive. The causeway will be constructed from the sea, the land being reclaimed from the water. Artificial islands will be constructed along its length.
The centerpiece of the city will be the Muburak al-Kabir Tower with a massive height of 1001 m, not an accidental decision, moreover an inspired connection with Arabic culture and literature - honouring the classic tale of ‘One Thousand and One Nights’. This will be completed no later than 2012.
In addition to its strategic trade and business areas, there will be world class entertainment and leisure facilities, with many hotels, spas and environmental areas, alongside the creation of an Olympic Village - which will attain the highest international standards. Additionally, there will be new University and the development many other educational institutes and foundations. It is expected that it will also be the location for the embassies of many foreign countries.
