160 billion euros in the hands of only 500 landlords.
The value of privately owned property in the UK which is currently in the ownership of only 500 of the biggest landlords runs into around £177 billion sterling - in euros - 167.8 billion, according to research by the Estates Gazette Rich List for 2007. The average value of private property in the hands of these landlords is around 330 million euros, indicating an increase of around 15% on 2006.
The richest of these is the Duke of Westminster, who owns private property to a value to 10 billion euros, compared to 9,46 billion euros in 2006. Properties in Lancashire and Scotland are in his portfolio, as well as buildings in London’s Mayfair and Belgravia districts the wealthiest areas in London's famous square mile centre.
In second place on the list are the brothers David and Simon Reuben. Both enjoy ownership of around 5 billion euros, their portfolio consisting mainly of residential homes for the elderly.
In third place is the Irish businessman Sean Quinn, with property ownership to a value of 4,3 billion euros. His portfolio includes hotels, pubs and even electrical power stations.
The oldest landlord on the list is 87 year old Irish businessman, John Byrne, with properties worth around 112 million euros. The youngest on the list is 30 year old businessman Simon Morris, with property ownership of an estimated value of 100 million euros.
